Product Description

Item:

Vintage German white cotton Over-towel hand embroidered in bluework, depiciting a romantic scene of a young couple. The over-towel has blue trim at the top and bottom with Bobbin lace trim .

Over-towels as they are called in Germany, were a common sight in houses in Germany and Holland up to about the 1950s. They were used to decorate a kitchen and to hide the every-day, unadorned kitchen towels. They are draped over the rods with the top part folded over (it is usually decorated as well). They are usually heavily embroidered and decorated with various types of scenes, or with abundant floral decorations. Their aim was to make plain, utilitarian kitchens more decorative. Often you will see them with a Dutch-themed motif, with a saying, or with figural scenes. Because of the fold-over flap, over-towels can often be recycled as a small curtain, with an instant built-in valance - a nice added touch. Some of them have a pocket at the back, ready for a rod to be inserted. On the ones that do not, adding one is a simple job. You can also either drape the towel over a rod and pin or sew it in place - quick and simple instant decor.

Measurement 30 x 51 (this is full length)

Our linens are purchased directly from estates, and in some cases, antique markets or private homes, and due to the very large volume in which we buy and sell them, we obviously cannot clean and restore them ourselves and still keep them so very affordable. Thus, all these stored-for-decades linens must be assumed to have storage marks, fold-line darkening, etc. Some may look pristine, some will need a good bath. Any damage, or discoloration that we feel may not come out with proper cleaning, will be described. All of these are sold as is, in other words they need washing. We sell a fantastic array of specialized cleaning products to handle anything, and we provide detailed care instructions.

It took me some time to find tea table size doilies and I must say all the of six doilies (each different) I ordered from Touch of Europe are in most excellent condition exactly as they described. I am most pleased with the products I purchased and recommend Touch of Europe to everyone at the highest level.

Reviewer: Diane Barron (Waller, TX)

I bought 11 different Red Work Overtowels to use as curtains in my kitchen. They are perfect! The fabric is wonderful and the work is beautifully done. The fact that they are antique and hand embroidered makes them so unusual and eye catching. I only had to add curtain clip rings and fold them to the length I wanted then hang them up.
